Background
The official name was “C-34”. I grew up calling it “The Ring” and a lot of people know it as “Gumbo-Limbo” due to a large gumbo-limbo tree that once stood on part of the tropical hammock area.
This section of the Thousand Islands is approximately 105 acres of state-owned islands just south of the golf course. Beginning in 1972 a perimeter dike was dredged around it in an experimental effort to control mosquitoes. The story of this experiment brings together Mr. Jack Salmela from Brevard County Mosquito Control, Dr. Maurice Provost of the Florida Medical Entomolgy Lab and NASA.
